History of the Old North End
The Old North End was originally built and populated by Burlington's working class community. Those that worked in the mills near Winooski Falls and at the Bay chose to settle there to be closer to their employment. In the 1820s the Champlain Glass Factory opened at Battery and Pearl Streets. The company later added housing, establishing George Street. A new mill built near Winooski Falls prompted the creation of Riverside Avenue in an attempt to make the road more useable.
